Character Review: Keno

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has always had a lot of different characters introduced.  Good and bad, some of these characters stay in the story and others fade away.  The funny thing is, a lot of the time characters who are remembered only get one time to shine in TMNT History.  Which is what we can say about Keno, the pizza delivery boy who worked for Roy’s Pizza in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze.  Remembered by many fans from that movie that came in 1991.  Keno to this day has not been brought back into the franchise.  Here is my thoughts of this pizza boy who knew how to kick butt.

Keno was played by Ernie Reyes Jr, who was Donatello’s stunt performer in the first TMNT movie.  He impressed the Producers so much that they gave him his own role out of costume in the second film.  Where he could meet the Turtles.  Ernie was a 3rd degree black belt at the age of nine. He got into entertainment through a few movies and even got his own TV show called “Side Kicks” when he was 12 years old.  His skills alone was one of the many reasons to bring him into the Ninja Turtle films.

In the movie Keno is the pizza delivery boy who has been taking pizza’s to April’s Apartment.  He realizes she orders a lot, and even makes a joke about it when he hears that the order is for her at the beginning of the film.  Though on his way to deliver the pizza, he sees a mall being broken into and decides to stop the crime.  It gets out of hand and he sees the Ninja Turtles come in and save him.  They stuff him in a trash so he doesn’t see them leave, but they take the pizza and pay for it.  This gets Keno curious about the Turtles, and he puts his curiosity to use by checking April’s apartment.  Finding the Turtles and making friends with them.  When Keno learns of their trouble he wants to help.

Keno has a good heart which is seen from the beginning of the film.  As he risks himself to try and stop a robbery.  He’s curious, and good at putting clues together.  If the Turtles did not take the pizza, he may not have connected them back to April’s apartment.  He’s strong and very sure of himself, to the point that he gets in over his head.  Though he can not just stand there when he knows others are in danger.

Ever since I saw this movie for the first time in 1991, I was in shock and awe by Keno’s skills.  I liked him as a character.  I loved that the Turtles had a friend who can fight by their side and he brought pizza to them.  Could they have a better friend?  I did not think so, the movie did a great job at picking someone to join the TMNT team.

While I enjoyed Keno’s entrance into the movie.  I would’ve like to know a bit more about him.  He seems like he’s willing to put his neck out for people and is really good in the Martial Arts.  It would be neat to find out what inspired him to train and get that good.  And to learn more about why he’s so impatient to help others.   There just seems to be more to his character that would've been neat to see.  Though Keno only lasted the one movie.  So we never do  get to learn about his life, and how he has fit the Turtles into it.  Though with the lack of information given on Keno, it does give the fans room to play with doing fanfics and using the character as his history is not set in stone.

Keno is one of my favorite characters that was made for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies.  I liked his role so much that I looked up interviews on Ernie and went back to watch some of his old movies and the “Side Kicks” TV series.  Keno was a  great addition to the TMNT line of characters and I hope to see someone official bring him back.  Nickelodeon does have their own pizza boy.  Wonder if we’re going to see more of him, than just being an extra.

Hey Michele! Great review :) I think my favorite part about Cowabunga Corner is your character reviews, especially of the ones that have gone unnoticed for a few years. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your next review!
