In this episode of “Cowabunga Corner” I’m talking about the Viacom buy out of Ninja Turtles.
On October 21st, 2009, Peter Laird finished a sale of all TMNT, besides for the Mirage comic version to Viacom. Selling them for $60 Million. The sale was a surprise to everyone, as we all knew Ninja Turtles were having a big year with their cross country tour, comics, and the “Turtles Forever Movie” as well as the release of “Turtles Smash Up” video game. The last thing on any of our minds was them being sold.
Here I talk about my reaction to learning of the sale, my thoughts on Nickelodeon with their shows and channels. About our fears of Eastman and Laird having no say in the future of the TMNT, yet how little they had to do with some of the history of TMNT. And a short message to Viacom.
What I did forget to mention in the blog is that Peter Laird has not sold everything TMNT, he kept the rights to doing up to 18 Mirage comics a year. Though at this time he does not know if he will start doing these comics or not, as he tries to get his life back in order. Seeing all that has changed since he started working on Ninja Turtles. If you would like to hear more about what is going on with Peter Laird, please do check out his personal blog at:
We are all still waiting on future news of the Turtles, with a new show coming out and a new movie. Let’s all put our trust into Nickelodeon at this time, that they will handle the Turtles with respect like they did for Avatar: The Last Air Bender, Wolverine and the X-Men, Iron Man, and many other series that has been on their channel. I don’t think we have to worry about them falling in the same line up as Spongebob, My Life as a Teenage Robot or Jimmy Neutron.
Please give us a video response on what you think of the sale to Viacom, try to be open about this on your reasons of why you like or dislike these changes.
