"Hugo" DVD & Blu-Ray

A boy on his own, hiding, working and on a mission, Hugo Cabret lived in the walls of an old train station, setting the clocks everyday through the train station and living his own adventure as he is not paid and is alone in this world.  After his father passed away, Hugo's uncle brought him to the train station, teaching him of this hidden home in the walls and how to set the clocks. Though the Uncle did not stay, as he left Hugo to fend for himself.

Holding onto the memories of his father keeps Hugo going.  His father was working on with him on a project, to bring an old robot boy back to life by repairing it.  This project became Hugo's past time and goal, as he would set out to find replacement pieces for the broken boy by stealing from a toy store there in the station to find pieces for his project.  Then one day he is caught stealing, which is where this story begins.  The shop owner steals a notebook from Hugo, which is very important to him.  In order to get the book back, he has to work for the store owner.  As he also makes friend with the owner’s stepdaughter.

Now the trailers for this film gives a few different feels for what the movie could be about.  An adventure story between two kids trying to put this robot together was the main feel I got from the trailer.  It would show Hugo running from the officer who works at the Train station, even their poster has Hugo hanging from the arm of a huge clock there at the station. To my surprise though the movie was not a high adventure film, it was a bit of a mystery movie, where all of Hugo's missions come together at the end, connecting the dots of a very large puzzle.

On a personal level I was disappointed in the lack of adventure that I was hoping to see.  As I've recently went through a surgery, going to a movie while healing was not an easy choice.  Hoping for a film with a fast pace to help stay awake with the pain medications that I was on.  While the story was very well placed together, very interesting, and with great designs, this movie would of been better for me on another day where I've had time to get through my healing process.  I felt myself many times drift and trying to keep my eyes open to enjoy the film, and from what I did see, I truly do know I would enjoy this film.  So if anything, I wish the marketing was a little more true to the film.  Everyone in my group, agreed that this film was not anything like we went in believing it to be.

For the others in my group though this was a nice surprise, as the movie's twists and turns were all very enjoyable.  The history of movies was tied nicely into this film. Sharing a story of an entertainer who went from magic shows to making movies.  Though after World War 1 disappeared from the big screen, you join Hugo and his new friends Isabelle and Rene to piece together the mystery of this lost entertainer.

Along the way, also get to see the world from Hugo's eyes.  A lone boy who wants to be free without worry, his father died in a fire, his Uncle left him here where he's always on the run and no one really knows him, no one in which he has felt comfortable sharing his story with.  While trying to fix others, he truly has a lot in his life which needs fixing as well.

What I really do like with this movie was the way the story was told.  And I look forward to the DVD release to have a chance to see this again since I have healed up from that surgery.  This movie is coming out on DVD on February 28th.  I know someone in my family will be picking it up.  I give this movie a 8 out of 10, from what I remember.
