I got hundreds to thousands of photos through my life. A lot of which would match up to stories here on Cowabunga Corner, but for one reason or another they are not chosen. This does not mean that these photos are not worth sharing and do not hold stories of their own. I would like to keep sharing what I can here on the site, so whenever I can I will share a photo and a story to go along with the photo. If it’s a part of events that has been shared here, we will link back to the stories of the events themselves as well. Hope everyone enjoys. Today’s photo is my dad and I on my Grandpa’s 1914 Indian.
This picture was taken in the early 1990’s, it was one of the few times the bike was pulled out where we got to look at it. Everyone took turns getting their pictures on the bike, as this bike has some real history with our family. My Great Grandfather bought the bike brand new down in Kentucky. He ended up courting my Great Grandmother on this bike. He also moved up to Michigan on the bike. I know there’s other stories about it too.
One thing I know for sure is that in the 1970’s my Grandpa put the bike back together. He did so in his basement, and shortly after had heart problems. Making it so he could not get the bike from the basement, he even had a trailer built for it. He kept it in a plastic bag down there. Where it remained until just earlier this year, where it was put into storage.
This bike is a part of the family, and means a lot to us. When I see it, I know how much my Grandfather loved it. And just all the work he put into getting the bike to look as good as it does. I hope that it remains with the family for years to come, as it’s already been in the family for over 100 years. My Grandfather was the first owner.
