I got hundreds to thousands of photos through my life. A lot of which would match up to stories here on Cowabunga Corner, but for one reason or another they are not chosen. This does not mean that these photos are not worth sharing and do not hold stories of their own. I would like to keep sharing what I can here on the site, so whenever I can I will share a photo and a story to go along with the photo. If it’s a part of events that has been shared here, we will link back to the stories of the events themselves as well. Hope everyone enjoys. Today’s photo is from 1993 when my dad was making my second Turtle costume.
This photo is from March 1993, as my original Turtle costume was getting too old and beaten to be used for events anymore. We decided to update it. The third Turtle movie was coming to theaters and we wanted this costume done before any movie theater gig’s to promote the movie. We finished the costume in a week, with my mom, dad and I working on it. Teenage Mutant Ninja TUrtles III came out on March 19th, 1993. Our first movie theater appearances with the new costume ended up being March 20th.
In this photo my dad is putting the skin onto the costume. The skin was a fabric we picked up from a place called Whoopee Bowl that we use to go too all the time when they were open. The fabric was originally blue, once placed on the costume we painted it green, made for nice shading. We would have to touch up the green paint from time to time on the costume. This was one of the hard part about the costume, while it made the costume stronger and look better. There was fabric inside and outside, making this one very hot costume to wear.
Ever make your own home made Turtle Costumes? Did you put a different skin on it? What did you use? Feel free to share memories, comments and questions below!
