Kodak Moment #49

I got hundreds to thousands of photos through my life.  A lot of which would match up to stories here on Cowabunga Corner, but for one reason or another they are not chosen.  This does not mean that these photos are not worth sharing and do not hold stories of their own.  I would like to keep sharing what I can here on the site, so whenever I can I will share a photo and a story to go along with the photo.  If it’s a part of events that has been shared here, we will link back to the stories of the events themselves as well.  Hope everyone enjoys.  Today’s photo is my mom with our old VW Van.

On September 13th, 1985, a Sunday afternoon around 3pm.  My mom was driving Eastbound on 8 Mile road with us three kids in the van.  My sister had front passenger seat, my brother and I were on the back seat, as the middle seat was not there.  I was trying to kick something closer to me, so I was scooted down in my seat with my feet stretched out.  Bryan was bent over trying to grab something. As a loud bang was heard…. windows were broken and we were crying in the back seat.

I don’t have much memory of when it happened. I remember my mom thinking someone threw a rock through the car, as we got to a nearby gas station and called the police.  The police informed us that it was a bullet that went through our VW van.  This bullet went over Bryan and scratched my forehead.  If I was sitting correctly in my seat, it would’ve went straight through my head.  I was only seven years old at that time.

Just one of the many dangerous adventures my family has fallen into during our life.  The window near my mom in this photo is where the bullet went in, the sliding door window.  The exit hole, was in the back window on the driver side.

Have you ever had a close call with a bullet?  If so, what happened?  Please feel free to share memories, comments and questions below.
