"Puss in Boots" DVD and Blu-Ray

The Shrek movies have always been something I have enjoyed.  So when I saw that there was a “Puss in Boots” film coming out, I knew I had to see it.  Though the film came out while I was going through a very big surgery, find out more about the surgery at RSD Update.  So there wasn’t a movie review posted here on Cowabunga Corner.  Though now that the movie is coming to DVD, I want to share some thoughts about this film.

The “Puss in Boots” film is about Puss on his own adventure, where we learn his history as he follows a dream from his childhood.  His old friend from growing up is Humpty Dumpty, who had betrayed Puss a long time ago and is now back in Puss’s life, saying he wants to make up from the past and has found the magic beans to get to the goose that lays the Golden eggs.  Intrigued by this, Puss teams up with Humpty and Soft Paws to get their hands on the Goose.

The movie is a lot of fun, with twists and turns.  Soft Paw is a great addition to Puss’s life, as she’s a thief that can even get the best of him.  There’s a lot of action, between fight scenes and chase scenes through the film.  And the animation is really top notch.  The people at Dream Works know what they’re doing.

Now, this is not my favorite film that Puss is in, my favorite movie for him remains “Shrek 2”.  He was a fresh new character while the Shrek movies were still doing their best.  And he helped make that movie amazing.  I’ve always enjoyed the interactions between Puss and Donkey, so that was missed in this film seeing as how Shrek and Donkey were not here.  I’m guessing that the film is set before he meets them.

The biggest problem I had with the film was a lot of it was predictable. What would happen between Humpty and Puss was easy to spot early on in the film.  The ending was a little different than I thought, but the same sort of outcome that I figured it would be.  I find it harder and harder to find a film that can really surprise me with where they go, or just keep me guessing.

Another thing that got to me in this film was the fact that Soft Paws is a declawed cat.  This seems to be something animated features are pushing lately.  Bolt had it and now “Puss in Boots”. Now in Bolt I was like, “awww that’s sad”  though to see it again only a few years later in a different film it seems like it’s becoming a forced issue and feeling rather out of place for a film where the Cats are walking and talking to humans even.  At least in Bolt, it felt like it fit, since the animals could not speak to the humans.

Overall I enjoyed the film, and though I may not buy it when it comes to DVD and Blu-Ray this February 24th, I may pick it up down the road for my collection of DVDs.
