Review: IDW MLP "Friendship is Magic" #1

In 2011 a good friend of mine told me I had to see the new “My Little Pony” show.  I thought that was a joke, Pony’s?  He wants me to watch “My Little Pony”?  He brought me over to his place and got me to sit through 11 episodes of this new series.  I thought it was good, though still surprised how much he enjoyed the series.  Soon I found a lot of my other local friends were into Pony’s, and even  part of something known as Brony’s.  So I’ve watched more the show, got a few toys and hang out with a lot of people to adore this show.  Once I heard that IDW Publishing was going to do a My Little Pony comic, I knew I had some interest in seeing it.  And now it is here, this is my review of the first issue of “My Little Pony ; Friendship is Magic” by Katie Cook.

This story starts off with the Cutie Mark Crusaders out on another mission to get their Cutie Marks.  Though as they work on their goals, things go wrong as a bunch of animals with glowing eyes attack them.

This is a nice opening for the comic.  Most people who’ve seen the series know about the Cutie Mark Crusaders and their connections to the main characters.  And if you’re new to the fandom, it’s clear what they are up too.  And that the threat seems to be a new one for them.  The art work by Andy Price is great, as it has a feel from the cartoon series.  Keeping it’s market towards the fan of the shows, while still open for new comic readers to look in.

The next page is a full page spread showing the Pony’s all out in town.  You have a some of favorites from the fans including Derpy, Dr. Whooves, Rainbow Dash, Firefly and more.  There is also cool Pony’s that I personally don’t like like the Blues Brothers.  It’s a great shot that is a hint that something is going wrong, as some of the Pony’s got very blank expressions.  While the others have normal eyes.

The following pages show the lead Pony’s realizing these changes in the other ponies, including the Cutie Mark Crusaders.  As they realize something is going on they have to flee to get away from all the changed ponies.  Twlight Sparkle remembers stuff from one of the story lines from the TV series, which they pull off the memory well enough for new readers to keep up without getting a full scale flash back.  They have to go against Queen Chrysalis, a shape changer known as a Changeling. Now Twlight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Rairty, and Applejack must go against an army of Changeling to save their home and friends.

As I read the comic, it felt as if I was watching one of the shows on TV.  Each of the characters were dead on, the artwork was really well done, and the storyline is something fans can be excited about.  Katie did a great job, at turning the show into a comic book series.  And the story has my interest into how these ponies are going to handle the upcoming battle.

An interesting fact about this comic, the preorders for it sold over 90,000 copies!  A sell out before it even hits the stores!  And from the looks of what I’ve seen, it was a good buy for the people who put in their orders.   Congrats to Katie and the IDW team for catching the attention of so many fans!  I hope that others enjoy it as much as I did.
