Review: Nickelodeon TMNT Mutations

I remember back in 1992 reading an story in  a magazine about new toys that Playmates Toys was going to release.  This magazine made it sound like they were going to cost a lot and normal fans were not going to be able to get their hands on them.  Later that year those same toys were released to stores at affordable prices.  These were the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutations.  Now with each cartoon we’ve gotten TMNT mutations.  Here is my review of the Nickelodeon Mutations for Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Leonardo.

The first thought that goes to my head is how much they still do remind me of the original mutations, even though they are so different.  They mutate the same way, which is a great feeling.  Knowing that kids these days, will get to have fun with some of the toys that brought me happiness in my youth.  These toys match up to the Turtles that kids today know and love, while keeping true to the original toy lines of the 90’s.

I do have two complaints about the new Mutation toys.  Both of which are shared in the video.  The first being the small weapons, as Donatello’s bo staff and Leonardo’s swords do not match to the size of the toy.  The other being their left hands, as each of the Turtles use the same molds for their hands.  The left hand is the one that gives it away.   Since I don’t use the weapons much with my toys, these are minor complaints for me, but for those who like to pose their toys for display with weapons in hand, this could be an inconvenience to them.

I do have to say this Raphael toy is really really happy.  Almost to the point where I had to double check to see if Michelangelo and him had the same mold for the head.  They don’t, as Mikey’s smile is slightly different.  I kind of like having a happy Raphael toy, it’s different and did stand out to me.  While he’s known for his temper, we have seen him happy more than a few times in the series.

Over all these toys are fun.  I recommend them for children to get to enjoy the toys that many adults did for our cartoon back in the day.  For collectors who want different versions of the Turtles displayed through their room.  Just remember the weapons are off in size and the left hand, does have a problem with holding the weapons.  Those are the only two real flaws I found with this series of toys.

These are from Playmates Toys.  The company that has stayed with the TMNT for the longest time, and helped make the Turtles to be what they are today.  Please do take the time to check their websites:
