Review: Turtle Comm (1991)

Today we are going to take a look at the original Turtle Comm role play toy released by Playmates Toys in 1991. I recently found this at Dlux Expo in Michigan. Mine is not the same as it was originally, so I will note where things are missing to the best of my knowledge.

The Turtle Comm is made of a sturdy plastic and is modeled after the phone used by April O'Neil in the original animated series. It is a flip open design, with a morse pad on the bottom and a "screen" on the top, represented by a slot with interchangeable calling cards. I believe the original included Donnie, Raph, Casey, Usagi, and April. The front had a "TURTLES" sticker across it as well as stickers lining the screen and morse pad.

To use the turtle comm, you open the lid and slide out the "antennas" which swivel out from the sides. You can them press the shell icon to make morse code messages. A guide is included in a booklet with the turtle comm, as well as a sticker that surrounded the lights. My turtle comm has a Leatherhead card in the screen, so to call him you would type "L" in morse(•_••). The turtle comm would have made a beeping noise along with the lights, though the speaker on mine is damaged. There is a belt attachment on the back, so you can also wear it on your belt or pocket.

If you can find one of these I do recommend getting one for yourself. It's a really fun toy, and would also make a great prop for your TMNT cosplay.
