Title: Ninja Turtles

More news on the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film has been confirmed.  The studios is looking to title the movie “Ninja Turtles”, instead of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”.  This was confirmed by Michael Bay on his website.  Of course this is causing a lot more people to jump up and down right now, since there was the big alien scare just last week where people were screaming that “Teenage Mutant” is part of the title.  So was this bad timing to tell everyone that “Teenage Mutant” is removed?

For anyone who thinks that this is a new concept, I will like to step back into the 1990’s when the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series was removed from the air and a new TV show was by Saban was coming out to keep the TMNT on TV.  That series did a change to the title from what we knew, they were no longer called ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ it was just ‘Ninja Turtles’ with “The Next Mutation” subtitle added on.  So in all rights, this movie will not be doing anything new. The TMNT has been called “Ninja Turtles” for years.  They’re just working at making the title a little different, much like the 2007 film called itself TMNT.

Now the timing of giving us this news all seems like a marketing promotion to me.  First we get the 15 second clip with Michael Bay saying “The Turtles are from an alien race”. Fans went nuts, and the Turtles end up on Conan and TMZ.  All over the place we were seeing the mention of “Teenage Alien Ninja Turtles” from fans.  I lost count of the messages I got from people asking me if I knew of this, because it was just that big of news.  Michael Bay caused a second uproar as he tried to tell the fans to calm down, without giving a real reason as people still feared that his line was “The Turtles Are an alien race”. Fans start petitions to get Michael Bay off of the film.

Whoever released that video clip, released gold for the studio as you can’t really pay anyone for as much promotion as the film is getting.  I did jump up to add my words, first trying to say that we could be misunderstanding this.  Though I did defend the idea that the word from an alien race could mean the ooze, which got people coming to me saying “why not have the turtles as aliens.” So I wrote my piece of why I felt the Turtles belonged to Earth, still saying that I do not feel that Michael Bay meant the Turtles themselves are aliens.

With all this promotion running high, blood pumped on both sides as people defend the Ninja Turtles or Michael Bay, something was bound to come out that might help calm everyone down.  This is when we got the interview with Jonathan Liebesman.  While some people take offense to what he said, others take ease in hearing him confirm a few things without really confirming it.  As the director of the film, he is under contracts to where he can not give away the plot or all the details.  So it’s tricky to answer questions.

Now the studios see that the a handful of the once loud fans are taking this answer and resting with it.  The news is not going as hot or strong as it was before the Jonathan Liebesman interview.  So what new thing could get us talking again?  How about the new title... ‘Ninja Turtles’  bring up all of the people’s fears again about the alien subject, treating it like it’s a new idea for them not be to be called “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”.    Now you have yourself a new hot topic to have spread across the internet.

Until December 2013, we will not know what they’re working on behind the closed doors.  We will get teasers, good and/or bad, to get us talking.  The studio, producers, directors and such will do things that will keep us talking about the the movie to help with promotion.  If you look at this movie, it’s not even coming to theaters this year and it’s already had more promotion than the 2007 TMNT film did!

How do I feel about the name “Ninja Turtles” instead of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”?  I don’t mind, as it’s just a title and has been changed before.  The hints that I needed about the film still come from the Jonathan Liebesman interview and I want to see where they go with the movie.  I trust Kevin Eastman, as he’s always cared deeply for the Turtles and will not let them be handled in a way that he feels will not give respect to the Turtles or the fans.  So for now, I will sit back and keep watching as new tidbits come out about the film.  But I will do my real judgement when I actually see the movie next year.

With all the news going around, do you personally feel that this could be a promotional stunt, too?  Or do you think there’s something else to it?  What are your thoughts on the name going from “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” to “Ninja Turtles”?   Share your thoughts here in our Comment section.  Please remember all email addresses are kept private.

From the beginning when I was a little kid I have always called them Ninja Turtles. Well when I was little I said it more like 'Inja Turtles. I almost never say the full name Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to this day. So I don't mind them just calling it Ninja Turtles. I hope the movie will be good.

I don´t find that title so bad, I mean, almost everybody said " Ninja Turtles " instead of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles completely, but the first time I saw Ninja Turtles : The Next Mutation , the title didn´t sound too cachy for me, but still, I enjoy the show and the concept .

I just hope that this title couldn´t be applied to the lose of characteristic elements ( like the characters to be both TEENAGE and MUTANT ).

(Michele Ivey - I trust Kevin Eastman, as he’s always cared deeply for the Turtles and will not let them be handled in a way that he feels will not give respect to the Turtles or the fans.)

I think this quote sums it all up for me, kevin Eastman won't let anything that will break up the all ready well founded turtles fan base as the turtles are his and Lairds brain child and if the product such as this movie continues to have his support and input we should all be pretty happy with the outcome....

Personally i am a real sceptic when it comes to anything Michael Bay has too do with but I'm also a huge turtle fan so just the fact that a new live action movie is in production has me super excited.

Like half the turtles fans out there when i heard the word alien i went crazy on blogs, threads and Facebook posts alike tearing the skin off this idea and letting my outrage be known... but many elements of the turtles multiverse that we have come accustom too through the animations have many of these themes already incorporated in it and as long as the turtles themselves rant aliens I'm happy.....
