TMNT Nominated for 3 Annie Awards!

In 1988 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles won two Annie Awards, one for Best Animated Television Production and the other for best voice actor, which was given to Pat Fraley for the voice of Krang.  Even though the TMNT took off as a huge hit for a long time after this, they never came back up for the Annie Awards with their cartoon series.  In 2008 Sean Song was nominated for Storyboarding in a Feature Production with TMNT 2007, though sadly Sean did not win.  So for us Turtle fans, the fact that Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Series has taken on three nominations for the Annie Awards, this is a big deal and excitement for us.

The first on our list is Michael Chang for Directing in Animated Television/Broadcasting Production.  Michael was chosen for the episode “Never say Xever”, which is really an awesome episode.  In this episode we see three big fight scene with the Turtles, that shows a lot of action, as well as some down time where the Turtles have to think about their actions.  The animation flows nicely and the fight scenes are ones you can watch over and over again.  Truly a work of art.

The second Nomination is for for Storyboarding in Animated Television/Broadcasting Production.  This has two names connected to it Irineo Marramba and Ciro Nieli for the episode “I think his name is Baxter Stockman”.  Once again some great show of artwork in this episode, which flows very nicely.  One of the coolest scenes in this episode is a skateboard scene where Michelangelo is going from rooftop to rooftop while skateboarding and listening to music.  This had to take some serious storyboarding to make it all work as good as it did.  Once again an awesome choice.

And the Third Nomination goes to “Voice Acting in an Animated Television/Broadcasting Production, with Mae Whitman as April O’Neil for “The Rise of the Turtles”, which was the first two episodes of the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Series.  Mae is playing the newest version of April O’Neil, a teenage girl who meets the Turtles because her father was kidnapped by aliens known as The Kraang.  Now Mae is a wonderful voice actress, as she did shows like Avatar : The Last Airbender, so personally I’m really excited she’s working on TMNT.  And I am truly happy for her getting this Nomination.

Now while I think these are all cool choices, I was a bit surprised that one of the episodes that brought us fans into an uproar of excitement was not on the list. “The Gauntlet” is one of my favorite episodes in the season, while I heard some people mention the pacing, I personally thought it was a fun and thrilling episode with some of the best directing in fight scenes.  The battle between the Turtles and Shredder was such an outstanding and powerful scene.

Another area that deserves credit for these shows is the writers.   They are able to keep the show fresh and enjoyable for people of all ages, and while making it exciting for the new fans to pull them into this wonderful show.  They have been able to write in enough stuff to get us fans of the other series, sitting on the edge of our seats watching them.  Waiting for the next little nods that we can take into account from our history with the Turtles, be it the Purple Dragons, Murakami, Wolf, or Pete the Pigeon.  These Writers have got some outstanding skills.

I am very thrilled for the people who have gotten the Nominations from the Annie Awards.  Ciro Nieli is a big one for me, who I truly do hope to see on the winner list!  He’s put his heart into the show, working the writers, directors, storyboarding, and even the voices.  Ciro has his fingerprints all over the Nickelodeon series. Congrats to you and your fellow teammates for getting to this point!

For the first time since 1988 a Television Series of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is in the Annie Awards and I for one am excited!  I’ll be on the edge of my seat to hope that they walk out of this with three wins for TMNT!
