What's Happening This Week - December Week 4

Well, it's Christmas time for some people and there's still time to get that last minute gift! I've already expanded on the items that I'll be covering as we were a bit light in the way of Blu-Ray and DVD releases this week. So, for this week, I'm going to be covering a handful of movie releases, toy releases, and book releases!

So, here is what's happening for this fourth week of December!

Movies In Theater

Every year, there is always at least one movie that gets released on Christmas. This year, there's Into the Woods, a updated take on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale stories.

SYNOPSIS: Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them.

Starring: Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Emily Blunt, Frances De La Tour, James Corden, Johnny Depp, Lilla Crawford, Lucy Punch, Meryl Streep

Director: Rob Marshall

It seems lately that there are a lot of movies, tv shows, books, and comic books that take a go at the  old fairy tale stories we know and love. Sometimes, it oversaturates the market. Much like with zombies, I think fairy tale stories will start to taper off and we'll get less of them for a while. Though, we still have some time to go before that happens. What makes this particular movie different than say Maleficient, is that it doesn't focus on one particular fairy tale but multiple stories and it is also a musical. The cast seems to be amazing. Meryl Streep is a legend in the film industry. Of course, we also have the eccentric Johnny Depp. Anna Kendrick I'm sure will be doing a lot of singing in this movie, she has a wonderful voice. The one I'm looking forward to seeing is James Corden. It's good to see he is taking on some American roles before he steps in for Craig Ferguson on the Late Late Show on CBS next year.

Look for this  movie to hit theaters December 25, 2014!

We're pretty light on movies being released to the home market this week.

SYNOPSIS: Dominion is an epic supernatural drama set in the near future. Specifically, 25 years after "The Extinction War," when an army of lower angels, assembled by the archangel Gabriel, waged war against mankind. The archangel Michael, turning against his own kind, chose to side with humanity. Rising out of the ashes of this long battle are newly fortified cities which protect human survivors. At the center of the series is the city of Vega, a glistening empire that has formed from the ruins of what was once Las Vegas.

Starring: Christopher Egan, Tom Wisdom, Roxanne McKee, Luke Allen-Gale, Anthony Head, Rosalind Halstead

I didn't watch Dominion: Season 1 while it was airing on the SyFy Channel this past year. It was based off a movie called Legion, that I just didn't have much particular interest in. I believe I watched one episode, not the first one, and I just could not find enough interest to make me want to continue watching the show. The Blu-Ray has a few special features on it's two discs. On Disc One, you'll get the UltraViolet (subject to expiration) and Deleted Scenes. On Disc Two, you'll get the  Alternate Extended Version and special Deleted Scenes for the episode "Beware Those Closest To You", and you'll also will receive a Gag Reel for the entire season.

SYNOPSIS: Kiera Cameron, a police officer from the year 2077, continues her uneasy alliance with Vancouver Police Detective Carlos Fonnegra and grapples with the big question: why was she sent to the past? Meanwhile, tech genius Alec struggles to understand the mysterious message sent from his future self as the Liber8 terrorists becomes more strategic, and even more lethal.

Starring: Rachel Nichols, Victor Webster, Erik Knudsen, Stephen Lobo, Tony Amendola (I), Lexa Doig

Now here's another show I haven't watched. Continuum is suppose to be a really good show, at least for the SyFy Channel. It's difficult sometimes to find a solid science fiction show that isn't a retelling or based on a movie/book. From what I've read, people do genuinely like the show overall. I really should try to pick up watching this show during the Winter Hiatus of all of the other shows I watch.

The special features seem a bit lacking to me, though it is good that they do include "webisodes" on each disc. There's also two episode commentaries with the creator and the director/executive producer, as well as a Behind the Scenes feature for the show.

Books/Graphic Novels

SYNOPSIS: The #1 New York Times bestseller returns! Visit new planets, meet new adversaries, and explore a very new direction as Hazel becomes a toddler, while her family struggles to stay on their feet. Collects Saga #19-24.

By: Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples

Publisher: Image Comics

I have read Volume 1 and Volume 2 of Saga, and I have absolutely loved it. My friend brought me Volume 1 to read one day, and I immediately ran out to buy my own copy and picked up Volume 2. This is a very original series that hits a lot of key points in our own lives. It's very easy to become engulfed in the series, even though it can become overwhelming with dialogue.

I haven't picked up Volume 3 yet, been meaning to, but just haven't. I probably will very soon and pick up this Volume as well. If you like a mystery with romance set in an otherworldly environment, you'll enjoy this series.

SYNOPSIS:A sequel to I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: Return to Paradise, this novella picks up with Mark racing to Dulce, New Mexico, evading capture from both the Mogadorians and the FBI. On the road, his mysterious new ally—a fellow blogger from They Walk Among Us who Mark knows only by the screen name GUARD—sends him a care package to help in his quest to find Sarah. Inside is a stack of cash, high-tech equipment, and some seriously advanced weaponry, all begging Mark to once again ask the question: Just who exactly is this guy? As Mark gets closer to tracking down Sarah, he also gets closer to discovering the identity of this enigmatic figure who seems to know so much about the Loric. When the truth about GUARD is finally revealed, nothing will ever be the same.

Written by: Pittacus Lore

Publisher: Harper Collins

Length: 351 Pages

I have not read anything from this book series, but looking up information on "I Am Number Four" shows a LOT of books by Pittacus Lore for this Series. I do know the original was turned into a movie a few years back. So, something has to be good about this Young Adult series.

Based on the smash-hit CW television series, these action figures depict Oliver Queen training and comes complete with totem, while the beautiful but deadly Canary stands ready to kick butt all over Starling City.

The only real thing I have to say about the two figures is that while Toy Chest News website shows a release date for 12/24/2014, Amazon does not show release date until March 18, 2015.

The Canary figure looks quite awesome. I love this show, too.
