Movies In Theater

Synopsis: Set within the world of global cybercrime, Blackhat follows a furloughed convict (Chris Hemsworth) and his American and Chinese partners as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Lee-Hom Wang, Viola Davis, Wei Tang

Directed By: Michael Mann

Chris  Hemsworth has certainly made a name for himself since his role of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though, with this movie, I'm just not sure I can see him as a cyber-criminal. I haven't decided if this will be a movie I will go see while it is in  theaters. I might go see it, or I may just wait until it hits Netflix. It's difficult for me to watch movies about cyber crime when I'm married to a computer expert. Actually, he'll rant about anything where computers are used in an entirely impossible way. It can be frustrating to say the least.

I do hope this movie does well, as I would like to see Chris Hemsworth do more than Marvel movies. He's really not that bad of an actor. My favorite non-Marvel role of his so far has been Cabin In The Woods.

Synopsis: Doug Harris (Josh Gad) is a loveable but socially awkward groom-to-be with a problem: he has no best man. With less than two weeks to go until he marries the girl of his dreams (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting), Doug is referred to Jimmy Callahan (Kevin Hart), owner and CEO of Best Man, Inc., a company that provides flattering best men for socially challenged guys in need. What ensues is a hilarious wedding charade as they try to pull off the big con, and an unexpected budding bromance between Doug and his fake best man Jimmy.

Starring: Josh Gad, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, Kevin Hart

Directed by: Jeremy Garelick

I received so many invites to go see this movie, but I just had so little interest in seeing this movie that I turned down all of the FREE offers. While I like comedy movies, I'm also very picky on my comedy movies. I did eventually enjoy movies like the Hangover, but there's a lot of others that I don't care for like Dumb & Dumber. Yes, I'm not a fan of that movie, even if it is a major comedy. I have odd tastes in movies from time to time.

As a kid, I never actually read or seen anything about Paddington. I had a lot of childrens' books, but never about this character.  I'm sure for some who have read the novels, they may love to go see this movie. Me? I'm more than likely not going to see it now, nor when it is on Netflix. This just isn't a movie that has sparked my interest.

Blu-Rays and DVDs

SYNOPSIS: On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) reports that his beautiful wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick's portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?

Starring: Ben Affleck, Neil Patrick Harris, Rosamund Pike, Tyler Perry

Directed by: David Fincher

Wow is all I can say about Gone Girl. I have not read the book, so I went in with little to no knowledge of the story itself other than that it was a murder thriller. The more you watched, the more you started to despise certain characters and then you were left with your jaw hanging open. At points, it does seem laughable, but overall I did enjoy this movie. The acting was really good, as was the direction of this movie. While it won't be one I will add to my collection, as I have gotten pickier about what I buy, I wouldn't mind setting through a watching of this movie with others.

The special features we see this time are Audio commentary with Director David Fincher and 'Amazing Amy Tattle Tale' Book. While the book is pretty cool, I'd like to have seen more special features added to this blu-ray.

SYNOPSIS: Ex-NYPD cop Matt Scudder (Liam Neeson) now works as an unlicensed private investigator operating just outside the law. When Scudder reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker (Dan Stevens) hunt down the men who kidnapped and then brutally murdered his wife, the PI learns that this is not the first time these men have committed this sort of twisted crime…nor will it be the last. Blurring the lines between right and wrong, Scudder races to track the deviants through the backstreets of New York City before they kill again.

Starring: Astro, Boyd Holbrook, Dan Stevens, David Harbour, Liam Neeson

Directed by: Scott Frank

When we went to see A Walk Among the Tombstones, I was expecting something more along the lines of this movie being "Taken 3", without using that name. However, this movie was completely different. It was slower, with more of a backstory to the main character. I did enjoy watching this movie, and watching Liam Neeson be a great thriller action star. Again, not a movie I will add to my collection, but I will totally watch this with someone else if they haven't seen it.

It's a little light on the extra features. We only get A Look Behind the Tombstones and Matt Scudder: Private Eye.

Cole will be helped by the brilliant virologist Cassandra Railly and a math genius with mental issues, Jennifer Goines.

Books

Odd Thomas is back where it all started . . . because the time has come to finish it. Since he left his simple life in the small town of Pico Mundo, California, his journey has taken him to places strange and wonderful, mysterious and terrifying. Across the land, in the company of mortals and spirits alike, he has known kindness and cruelty, felt love and loss, saved lives and taken them—as he’s borne witness to the greatest good and darkest evil humanity is capable of. Again and again, he has gone where he must and done what he had to do—for better or worse—with his courage and devotion sorely tested, and his soul forever changed. Every triumph has been hard won. Each sacrifice has taken its toll.

Now, whatever destiny drives him has finally steered his steps home, where those he cares for most surround him, the memory of his tragically lost true love haunts him, and one last challenge—vast and dreadful—awaits him. For Odd Thomas, born to serve a purpose far greater than himself, the wandering is done. Only the reckoning remains.

Toys and Collectibles

Sin City Comic Book Marv by Eric So Oversize Vinyl Figure In a collaboration pairing two of the most stellar talents of contemporary pop culture, Dark Horse Comics is announcing a new limited-edition oversize vinyl figure of the character Marv, from Frank Miller's Sin City, to be interpreted by Eric So, considered a master of modern design and a seminal figure in the foundation of the Hong Kong designer art toy movement.

The figure is more of a re-invention than a reproduction. While it is clear that Miller's graphics inform the piece, it is more of a signpost along the way than the end of the journey. The Eric So touches abound from the detailing of the trench coat to the sharp angles and odd proportions of the character's features.

As we all know, Marv knows how to take a punch, and has the bandages to prove it. We are providing a pack of band-aid style stickers with each figure, and the consumer can affix them to Marv as they like.
